Forced to leave their country, Dounia and her grandparents set off in search for a new home. As she travels around the world seeking refuge, Dounia encounters many people and lives many great adventures. And when she faces an obstacle that seems insurmountable, the wisdom of the ancient world comes to her rescue in the form of the nigella seeds of her grandmother.
Marya will be joining us online after the screening for a family friendly discussion.
Every year, in August, a gigantic full moon appears and makes pistachio trees vibrate. It's a party, meaning the time pistachios are ready to be harvested. It was precisely on one of these nights that Marya Zarif was born, in Aleppo, Syria.
Raised in Syria, Marya now lives and works in Montreal, Québec.
Marya is the author, illustrator and co-director of the animated series Dounia, the author and illustrator of the children book Dounia, and the author and co-director of the movie ‘Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo’, coming in fall 2022. Multidisciplinary creator, Marya, imagines, develops, draws, writes and sets up worlds, stories, experiences and original properties for people from 3 to 99 years old !
In Dounia, Marya wrote a long love letter for her country and her people, with the secret desire to ‘include’ the audience in the family, creating emotional bonds between Dounia and the young viewers and their families, therefore raising awareness of migrants' cause.
